Livin' On a Prayer

"Livin’ On a Prayer" é a terceira música do álbum Slippery When Wet, lançado em 1986, da banda Bon Jovi.

Este álbum, terceiro de estúdio da banda americana, está na lista dos 200 álbuns definitivos no Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, ocupando a 44ª posição, e permitiu que, com os sucessos “You Give Love a Bad Name”, “Livin’ On a Prayer” e “Wanted Dead or Alive”, a banda alcançasse o status de “astros mundiais”. Quanto ao nome do álbum, Bon Jovi diz que foram as idas a bares de strip em Vancouver que o inspiraram. David Bryan, teclista da banda, diz que durante a gravação frequentaram um club de strip onde as raparigas passavam água e sabão umas nas outras. Daí o nome Slippery When Wet. Este álbum vendeu, só nos EUA, mais de 40 milhões de cópias, desde o seu lançamento.

Inicialmente, Jon Bon Jovi, não pretendia incluir esta música no álbum, mas, após Richie Sambora o ter convencido de que a música era boa, decidiu incluí-la. A música refere-se a um casal, Gina e Tommy, pertencentes à classe trabalhadora, que lutam pela manutenção da sua relação.

"Livin’ On a Prayer", alcançou o primeiro lugar em Billboard Hot 100, Mainstream Rock Tracks, nos Estados Unidos, o terceiro lugar em Aria Charts, na Áustralia, o quarto lugar em UK Singles Charts, e, por fim, o trigésimo lugar em Hot Digital Songs, no seu ano de lançamento, ou seja, em 1986.

Posteriormente, em 2006, foi votada, online, para a lista da VH1 “The 100 Greatest Songs of the 80’s”, acabando por ficar em primeiro lugar. Mais recentemente, na Nova Zelândia, a música ficou em primeiro lugar no programa “U Choose 40”, dos ícones dos anos 80, no canal de música C4, e em “Sing-a-long Classics List”.

Para além disso, no quinquagésimo aniversário da Billboard Hot 100, “Livin’ On a Prayer” passou a ocupar a 46º posição de “All Time Rock Songs”
